The Secondary School at Nexus is an academic yet energetic environment with myriad opportunities for learners and teachers; we strive collaboratively to achieve the school’s aim of providing a well-rounded education for all of our students. There are three phases that build upon each other. Years 7 to 9 are the Middle years. The curriculum provides increasingly focused study of distinct disciplines, while retaining a supportive pastoral programme.
In Years 10 and 11, learners study towards International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and finally, Year 12 and 13 learners undertake the highly regarded IB Diploma Programme (IBDP).
The school day is divided into eight periods of 40 minutes, with two break times for eating or recreation. Learners meet with their tutors each day for morning registration.
The Nexus curriculum structure as a whole is designed to take advantage of the latest research into effective learning and is taught by a team of highly qualified and trained expatriate teachers with experience in international and British-based curriculum schools. Teachers make full use of the school's superb specialist facilities for subject teaching and provide a comprehensive co-curricular program.
The Co-Curricular Activities programme operates during lunchtime and after school. The School Library offers books and other media to support the wide-ranging curriculum. To support literacy development, a varied fiction section, together with information books and magazines, DVDs and CDs, cater for learners' recreational needs in a range of languages. Classes may visit the library but learners are also encouraged to drop into the library at breaks, lunchtime and after school.
The whole curriculum is underpinned by a pastoral programme which seeks to develop the individual skills necessary for learners to make the right decisions, take responsibility for their actions and have a broad understanding and appreciation of the cultures that live together in our international community.
The use of ICT is fully integrated in the learning of all subjects at the school. All learners have a MacBook so they can access our online learning environment and the Internet.
Learners enter the Secondary School from the age of 11 and in Years 7, 8 and 9. They follow a course of study that provides a broad and balanced range of learning experiences that is derived from, and based upon the UK National Curriculum. It has been further developed and constructed to recognise the international context and setting of the school but the basic skills and concepts remain the same. There are many opportunities to study international themes and cultures across the wide range of subjects’ learners take.
In Term 3 of Year 9, learners start to make decisions concerning the courses they will pursue during Years 10 and 11 – IGCSE courses. In order to help learners make informed decisions, the school will hold an Options Meeting, or Evening, where parents and learners will be informed of the courses available for study at IGCSE. Learners also have opportunities to meet with careers advisors and receive guidance on those areas of the curriculum that are offered only from Year 10 and beyond.
The academic programme offered in Years 10 and 11 builds on the skills developed in Years 7 to 9. Learners follow a core curriculum, containing Science, Mathematics, English and Global Perspectives (a humanities/social science course). We encourage learners to follow a Modern Foreign Language as an elective subject. Learners select four other subjects from a subject choice grid. The learners are guided so as to ensure future study routes remain open to them and also that their overall subject choices offer a good balanced curriculum.
The curriculum in Years 10 and 11 encourages learners to:
• Develop oral and practical skills
• Develop an investigative approach
• Use initiative to solve problems
• Apply skills, knowledge and understanding
• Undertake individual projects and learn to work as part of a team
• Become more effective as independent learners
IGCSE examinations are designed to be accessible to the whole ability range. The subjects available to learners in Years 10 & 11 have been selected with the intention of providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which provides an excellent foundation for the IB Diploma Programme.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is the academic backbone of the final two years of study at Nexus International School (Singapore). This course offers learners the opportunity to study externally accredited examination courses that are accepted widely throughout the world as an entrance qualification for universities and colleges of higher education.
Building on the firm educational foundations established in their earlier studies at the school, the curriculum in Years 12 and 13 provides our Senior Learners with a challenging, relevant and varied course of study that recognises the demands that they will face in the 21st century.
All our learners have to work hard, and this is especially true of this programme, if they are to meet the rigours of this challenging level of study. They must demonstrate tolerance, cooperation and determination to achieve to their own full potential as independent learners, qualities that are integral to the mission of the school.
Entry to the IBDiploma Programme is not automatic. Applicants must meet requirements in both language and academic achievement. These requirements are outlined in the IBDP Curriculum Booklet.
In exceptional cases, the school may accept candidates for individual subject courses instead of the whole Diploma. Learners are guided to select individual IB subjects either at Standard or Higher Level, which focus on their specific strengths and may gain them entrance either directly to a degree course or to a Foundation course at university. We offer extra support in terms of teacher guidance, and, for example, more workshop or studio time where possible, to ensure these learners have the best possible opportunity to be successful in their chosen subjects.
