Nexus Learner Wins Third at National Dressage Championships: A Story of Dedication and Teamwork

Nexus International School Singapore is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our talented learner, Lilly.

Lilly recently secured 3rd place in the prestigious National Dressage Championships, a competition that gathers the finest riders from clubs across Singapore. Impressively, this was her third time competing at the national level.

A Winning Routine

The National Dressage Championships require riders to complete a series of tests judged by experienced professionals, including an ex-Olympian.  For the freestyle portion, riders choreograph a routine incorporating 12 specific moves while ensuring their music complements the horse’s movement. This showcases both the rider’s creativity and their ability to understand their equine partner.

“The freestyle was definitely challenging,” says Lilly. “There is a list of 12 moves you must incorporate into your routine, and accuracy is key. The music has to match the horse’s pace and movement too, so you really need to know your horse and have built a relationship with them. It’s very technical. “

What makes Lilly’s win even more remarkable is her partnership with her school’s horse, Rambo. “Unlike the riders who own their horses,” Lilly explains, “Rambo is a school horse, which means he has multiple riders who each have their own styles. I’ve been building a connection with Rambo for the past four years and this win is definitely a team effort.”

When speaking about how she prepared for the competition, Lilly highlighted the importance of learning from others. By observing the techniques of fellow competitors, she constantly seeks to improve her own performance. “There’s always something new to learn,” says Lilly. “The competition was a great opportunity to learn from other advanced riders perform and observe their techniques.”

Beyond the Competition

Lilly’s equestrian journey began over ten years ago, and her love for horses continues to inspire her.  She aspires to pursue a future in equine management, working with horses and training them. “I’ve been passionate about horses for as long as I can remember,” Lilly shares, “and this win makes me want to do more national competitions.”

Her passion for horses extends far beyond the competition arena and is evident in her dedication to stable management, a practice that teaches valuable skills in caring for these magnificent animals.

In addition to training 3 times a week, Lilly volunteers at the Riding For The Disabled Association Singapore (RDA), helping children with equine-assisted activities and showing them how to care for horses.

She is also passionate about sharing her knowledge with the next generation of equine enthusiasts and volunteers at the Polo Club Pony Camps, where she introduces younger children to ponies, showing them how to ride and care for the animals.

Nexus is incredibly proud of Lilly’s achievements. Her story is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and a deep love for animals. We have no doubt that Lilly will continue to achieve great things in the equestrian world and beyond!
