IB
PROGRAMME

WHAT IS
INTERNATIONAL
BACCALAUREATE (IB)?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is one of the world’s leading pre-university programmes. It is recognised by top universities around the world for its academic rigour and its development of the competencies and mindsets articulated in the IB learning profile. It is an excellent preparation for international university degree programmes.
THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE
(TOK)
Through an oral presentation and 1,600-word essay, IB learners are tested on their critical thinking, and are called upon to support, analyse and critique a theory, discussing how it translates to the real world.
THE EXTENDED ESSAY
(EE)
Learners produce a 4,000 word independent research piece preparing them for practical undergraduate research. Each international baccalaureate student at Nexus gets a mentor (a qualified teacher and subject specialist) to help guide them through their essay.
CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE
(CAS)
Learners go beyond the classroom to grow mentally, socially, and creatively. CAS aims to encourage learners to show initiative, demonstrate skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making, preparing them for life beyond education. At Nexus we have a dedicated overseas CAS trip in Year 12 to kick-start the IB journey.
The international baccalaureate diploma programme offers so much more than six academic subjects — it develops the whole person through its mandatory core components. At Nexus, the IB is embedded in all that we do and there are many opportunities to work with peers in their academic pursuits, as well as Sport, Arts, Music and Service to support learners to be successful and graduate to the university of their choice.
STEPS TO ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN YOUR IB DIPLOMA
Hear from our own Nexus International’s Class of 2020 alumni, Udit, who scored a perfect IB point score of 45/45 for his IB Diploma exams. Follow him on his journey to success and what he has learnt to help achieve his goals and widen his life opportunities. Watch the video to find out more.

The six subject groups are:

Learners may opt to study an additional Science or Individuals and Societies subject, instead of a course in the Arts. This caters for those that wish to choose Biology and Chemistry to pursue a route into medicine at university. Learners will be able to take some subjects at higher level (HL) and some at standard level (SL). HL and SL courses differ in scope but are measured according to the same grade descriptors, with learners expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level. Each learner takes at least three (but not more than four) subjects at higher level, and the remaining at standard level.

My time at Nexus helped me explore the things that I was interested in, in an environment that was safe and encouraging. Nexus gave me the courage and self confidence to go after what I really wanted. Since leaving Nexus, I’ve been studying cognitive science at UBC and I got my first real job which is really exciting. I’ve also become part of a lot of voluntary groups at UBC and in Vancouver, one of which focuses on providing clean drinking water to those in less economically developed areas. I’ve had so many fulfilling experiences in the last few months, from school to my job and volunteering and I know that if I wasn’t given the support that i received at Nexus, that I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to apply for my first job, or volunteer at a local charity on my own.

To those of you who are finishing school and moving on to the next stage in your lives, remember that there is so much out there. Don’t limit yourself. Take risks and put yourself out there. You’re going to have so many amazing experiences in the years to come but that will only happen if you let it. At first it was really hard for me but I successfully made it to the end of my first year at university and I’m looking forward to the years to come.

School Trips in the IBDP are designed to support their coursework through CAS projects, research and fieldwork. This allows them to demonstrate what they have learned in practical and new surroundings, attributing it to their dissertation.

Year 12 Trip – Telunas
In October, Year 12 learners go on a week-long residential trip to Telunas, Indonesia. They collaborate on a significant community project in which they visit and connect with a local village. This trip will provide significant contributions to each learner’s Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme, National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) as well as embed the understanding of elements of the Theory Of Knowledge (TOK) curriculum.

Year 12 Biology and ESS Trip – Indonesia
In May, learners from Year 12 go on a four-day/three-night residential trip to LooLa Adventure Camp to Bintan, Indonesia.
The purpose of the trip is to provide opportunities for fieldwork studies to our learners. Fieldwork is a vital component in the study of IBDP Biology and Environmental Systems and Societies. It connects the material we cover in the classroom with the real world. This experience will also provide them with field work skills that are a critical component of their IBDP Biology or ESS course.
