Nexus Celebrates Its Diverse School Community at This Year’s International Fair
The third annual International Fair at Nexus International School (Singapore) came back bigger and better than ever, celebrating the diverse school community through food, cultural performances and more.
Over 2000 people came to join in the celebration, organised by the school and its active parent community – the Nexus Community Group (NCG). The event kicked off with an emotional flag parade, representing over 60 nationalities that call Nexus International School home, followed by an incredible multilingual performance from some of the youngest learners in the school – the Year 1 & 2 Singing Stars.
A Showcase of Cultures From Around the World
The diversity of the Nexus community was showcased even further with a packed schedule of performances from learners, parents and staff. From martial arts displays to parent choirs, and with dances from around the world including India, Mexico, China and Ireland, there was a performance that everyone could enjoy. The stage also hosted our annual “Around the World Fashion Show” where families wore their finest national costumes and shared a piece of home with the Nexus community.
Beyond the performances, our parent community also organised an array of country stalls serving up iconic food from the home countries of our learners, as well as sharing cultural traditions and language with the community. The sense of national pride from each stall was palpable as families explored the world without having to leave the Nexus Sports Hall.
Families also had the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities from the ever-popular dunk tank and inflatables, to crafts like friendship bracelet making and colouring. We were also lucky to have parents who organised henna for our learners, as well as learners and parents who ran Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting and puppetry. Beyond this, we also welcomed external vendors who sold some of the tastiest international foods in Singapore including empanadas and boerewors.
Learners Take Initiative at the International Fair
The International Fair also provided Nexus learners with an opportunity to put their leadership and entrepreneurial skills into real-world use. The Secondary Learner Council, assisted by Mr Hayes, organised a range of traditional carnival games and activities for our community to enjoy, including penalty shoot outs, ring toss and ‘Spin the Wheel.’ Hundreds of younger learners took part in these activities with their families and enjoyed the opportunities that were thoughtfully planned by our Secondary learners.
This year’s International Fair also gave a group of secondary learners the chance to debut their ethical coffee start-up company, Neutrino Coffee. This group of learners, assisted by Mr Raza and Mr Kinlan, have set up a brand new coffee business in collaboration with a local coffee company, The Community Coffee. They have launched an ethically-sourced coffee-pod product that can be used in Nespresso machines, with all proceeds going to a foundation which supports the teams who grow the coffee in Ethiopia. Neutrino has been set up from ground zero, with learners responsible for branding, marketing, product-sourcing and testing and we are excited to see what the next year holds for this group of learners as the product comes to market. Keep an eye out for Neutrino Coffee at our parent events and workshops next year, or in the meantime, you can order your own coffee pods to enjoy at home here!
Last but by no means least, this year’s International Fair also saw the return of our learner-created Escape Room after a successful run during our recent Care:Others Week. The Escape Room was filled with custom puzzles, powered by Arduino circuits, Lego robotics and coded clues. Our learners, assisted by Mr Ciaran, have created a challenging and engaging activity which now over 100 learners, staff and parents have enjoyed, all whilst raising money for the Proteus Syndrome Foundation. You can learn more about the Escape Room, and donate to the Proteus Syndrome Foundation, in this blog.
A Truly International School
This fantastic day wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible energy and dedication of the NCG, volunteers, parents, vendors, staff, learners, and teachers! A huge thank you to everyone who helped to create such a celebratory day for our whole school community to enjoy.
