Our youngest learners thrive in their dedicated learning hubs that are crafted for exploration and play-based learning. From cosy reading corners to a fabulous outdoor garden with scooter tracks, water play and a playground, it’s a marvellous space for our Early Years learners.
The sandpit in the outdoor area is a wonderful opportunity for sensory play, encouraging exploration and creativity while reinforcing essential skills in language, math, measurement, and social interaction. Learners can immerse themselves in imaginative play by using the sand to make cakes, soups, or other creations, extending their home area outdoors. Here, learners choose how they engage with the sand, whether it’s building structures, measuring ingredients, or sharing their ideas with peers.
Our outdoor area features playground playhouses manufactured by KOMPAN, a company that designs equipment specifically for early childhood based on child observations and input.
Their expertly constructed playhouses offer our early years learners a great space to explore and play safely while developing essential skills and fostering creativity. They include interactive elements that encourage imaginative play, teamwork, and problem-solving, such as climbing down the twisted pole and experimenting with different textures of the materials and grass. By integrating play-based learning into our outdoor environment, we create a space where children can learn through exploration and social interaction.
The outdoor water play area at the playground is a vibrant and engaging space designed for hands-on exploration and creativity. Similar to the sand pit, children engage in sensory play as they enjoy the tactile experience of water running through their fingers. This water play area naturally draws children in, inviting them to experiment and splash around! At this station, they engage in social and collaborative play, as children come together to observe, contribute, and learn from one another.
During playtime and break time, you'll definitely see learners in bright red tricycles zooming past you as they race across this bike path that circles around the entire outdoor play area. This is one of our most popular activities, as the children navigate twists and turns that challenges them physically. Not only do they have a ton of fun, they also develop essential motor skills, balance and coordination.
Our Early Years garden is home to a papaya tree, banana tree, and a variety of exciting plants. It’s a hands-on, immersive experience where young learners can observe the life cycle of plants unfold and take part in the gardening journey themselves. From planting seeds to watering and caring for the plants, they discover the joys of responsibility and patience. And the best part? Harvest time! Learners have delighted in tasting papayas fresh from the garden and blending up banana smoothies to share as a class. This special space not only connects them with nature but also introduces sustainable practices, a core value of both Nexus and the IB curriculum.
