Infusing Tradition With Cutting-Edge Technology
To end the academic year, our Year 9 learners were tasked with performing “Romeo & Juliet” and creating adaptations in their chosen style.
Working in groups, the learners decided on their styles, resulting in unique versions such as a ‘Barbie Movie’ or LA-style rendition, a 1940s New York gangster interpretation, and an East End ‘Roadman’ London version, to name a few. The learners then had four weeks to prepare and devise their pieces.
To translate the script based on their chosen styles, the learners used ChatGPT and other AI tools to breathe new life into the familiar characters and plotlines. They also examined the traditional themes and found ways to adapt them to explore contemporary themes such as love, conflict, and free will, which resonate with today’s audience.
Our learners also focused on costume design, lighting, music and stage space, using projection and vocal tone effectively to engage their audience.
Throughout the unit, the learners were guided by the principles of IB’s Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. The ATLs helped them focus on improving their critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. They also navigated the complexities of character development, scriptwriting, and stage direction, all while seamlessly integrating technology into their artistic process.

The drama department was immensely proud of the learners’ work and their dedication to delivering a captivating performance. This unit was a fantastic way to explore the possibilities of AI in the arts and showcased how our commitment to innovation and technology can create engaging and unique learning experiences.
