Celebrating SwimFest 2026 at Nexus
We love swimming at Nexus, and SwimFest is our annual opportunity to celebrate all things aquatic! While Nexus is immensely proud of its highly competitive swim team, who consistently achieve outstanding results in various regional and international competitions, SwimFest celebrates the journey that many of our learners go on as they develop a love of water and swimming.
This year at SwimFest, learners from Nursery – Year 9 enjoyed a range of water-based activities, from obstacle courses and water polo to traditional swimming races and diving challenges. Parents came to watch their children take part and cheer on from the sidelines, providing another opportunity for our whole-school community to come together. Find out more about how we celebrated SwimFest 2026 below.
SwimFest: Celebrating Confidence in the Water
SwimFest deliberately moves away from the pressures of high-level swimming competitions, serving instead as a swimming event where the key metric is participation and enjoyment. The structure of the day is key. The varied programme includes fun challenges like navigating an inflatable obstacle course, participating in collaborative team games like water polo, and showcasing individual progress through traditional races and diving challenges. Every single activity is designed with the specific goal of encouraging teamwork, collaboration, and, most importantly, providing an opportunity for learners to showcase the water confidence they have built up through their weekly swimming lessons.
At the heart of the event is the commitment to ensuring that every single learner develops essential water confidence, foundational safety knowledge, and strong swimming skills. At Nexus, we view swimming not just as a high-performance sport, but as a critical life skill that fosters resilience, physical fitness, and personal well-being. This dual focus allows us to cater to emerging athletes while maintaining a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment for everyone.
Swimming at Nexus
At Nexus, swimming lessons begin early, with weekly, dedicated swim lessons for all learners from Nursery through to Year 6. These foundational sessions are designed to build comfort in the water—from simply blowing bubbles to floating independently—before moving on to mastering basic stroke techniques and developing a deep understanding of water safety protocols. The small class sizes and high staff-to-learner ratio during these lessons ensure personalised attention, helping to gently ease hesitant learners into a confident relationship with the water.
For our older learners in Secondary, swimming remains a significant and compulsory element of the Physical and Health Education (PHE) curriculum. Here, the focus shifts to refining technique, improving endurance, and introducing advanced aquatic skills such as survival swimming and specialised strokes. By integrating swimming throughout the entire school journey, we support our learners to not only acquire necessary swimming skills but also maintain and refine them over time, ensuring they are competent and confident swimmers for life.
