Celebrating Creativity: The Primary Art Fiesta at Nexus
The Nexus International School (Singapore) Atrium was recently transformed into a vibrant gallery during this year’s Primary Art Exhibition: Art Fiesta. Featuring over 750 artworks from every learner in Primary, the exhibition was a celebration of creativity, individuality and growth.
Each piece told a story of exploration, curiosity, and the joy of self-expression. Combined, they formed a united exhibition, showcasing the artistic community in Primary.
At the heart of this celebration was Natasa Markovic, our new Learning Area Leader for Primary Visual Arts, who joined Nexus this year. Though new to the Nexus community, Natasa has been a part of Singapore’s visual arts education scene since 2019 and brings nearly two decades of experience as an educator. We caught up with her to learn more about her vision for art at Nexus and the inspiration behind her first exhibition.
An Exhibition of Every Learner’s Voice
Across the school, our learners explored a wide range of artistic techniques, from collage, clay relief, and traditional painting to digital art and even stitching and printmaking.
“The overarching idea was to allow each learner to express their identity in their own unique way,” explained Natasa. “We wanted to show not just what they can create, but also who they are as young artists.”
Learning to Think and Act Like Artists
Behind every displayed artwork was a process of experimentation, reflection and growth.
“Learners gain insight into what an art show actually looks like — how an idea comes alive and how an individual artwork becomes part of a bigger whole,” said Natasa. “They learn that art is a process that takes time, patience, feedback and revision. They learn to act like artists.”
The exhibition also gave learners a chance to see beyond their own creations. Through activities such as a scavenger hunt around the gallery, they explored each learner’s work and discovered new ideas to inspire their future projects.
“It’s wonderful to see their excitement as they find their own artwork and share it with their parents and peers,” reflected Natasa. “There is such pride in their eyes when they see their creativity displayed on a large scale.”
How Nexus Approaches Primary Art
When asked what makes art at Nexus unique, Natasa highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity and individuality.
“At Nexus, there is a real focus on creativity, individuality and growth as an artist,” she said. “We encourage learners to explore their own ideas, try different materials, and work at their own pace. We value both the creative process and the final product.”
At Nexus, art is more than a subject; it is a journey of discovery and self-expression that connects to the units of inquiry in the PYP and celebrates the diversity of our international community.
“What I love most is how we celebrate art through collaboration and by exploring different cultures and artistic traditions,” she added. “It creates such a vibrant environment where every learner and their creativity is truly valued.”
Looking Ahead
As the paintbrushes are cleaned and the last pieces are taken down, the Primary Art team is already dreaming up their next creative showcase.
“We are constantly finding new ways to challenge our learners and celebrate their growth as artists,” said Natasa. “Stay tuned for our next big exhibition in the second semester!”
At Nexus, art is a way for our learners to express who they are and how they see the world. Through exhibitions like the Art Fiesta, we continue to nurture creativity, confidence and collaboration in every child.
