Turn the Page, Start the Adventure: Celebrating Book Week 2026 at Nexus
At Nexus International School (Singapore), learning doesn’t stay within the classroom walls. It comes alive through shared experiences, creativity and community. Book Week 2026 was a perfect example of this, bringing together learners, parents and staff in a whole-school celebration of reading, storytelling and imagination.
Centered around this year’s theme, Turn the Page, Start the Adventure, Book Week invited learners of all ages to explore stories from around the world, connect with real authors, and experience the joy of reading as something social, creative and deeply human.
Inspiring a Love of Reading Through Author Encounters
A highlight of Book Week was our rich programme of author workshops, designed to inspire learners at every stage of their reading and writing journey.
Primary learners had the exciting opportunity to learn from Sarah Ang and Melanie Lee, who shared insights into storytelling, character creation and the magic behind children’s books. In Secondary, learners engaged with a diverse range of voices, including Jennifer Ann Champion, AJ Low, Shamini Flint and Arun Ditha, exploring genres, themes and the craft of writing from multiple perspectives.
We were also thrilled to welcome Neil Humphreys, who led workshops not only for learners, but also for parents and staff, offering practical guidance on writing and publishing children’s books. These sessions reinforced an important message at the heart of our curriculum: literacy is a lifelong skill, and learning is a shared journey between school and home.
Libraries Alive With Choice and Curiosity
Throughout the week, both the Primary and Secondary libraries became hubs of activity. Learners were invited to dip in and out of a range of creative, learner-led activities, encouraging exploration, curiosity and choice — values that sit at the core of our approach to learning as an international school in Singapore.
Whether discovering new authors, taking part in literary challenges, or simply finding a quiet corner to read, learners experienced our libraries as dynamic spaces that support independence, imagination and a genuine love of books.
Building Connections Through Buddy Reading
One of the most heartwarming elements of Book Week was our buddy reading storytelling sessions, where Secondary learners visited Primary classes to read alongside younger learners and share stories together.
These moments beautifully captured the spirit of our school community, with older learners developing leadership and empathy, younger learners gaining confidence and inspiration, and stories acting as a bridge between age groups. It was a powerful reminder that reading is not just an academic skill, but a shared experience that connects us.
Stories From Around the World: Parent Storytelling
An annual favourite, parent storytelling sessions returned once again, offering our younger Primary learners the chance to hear favourite stories read aloud by parents from our community.
This year’s sessions celebrated the truly international nature of our school, with stories shared from over 20 countries including Bulgaria, Mexico, New Zealand, China, Sri Lanka, UK, Myanmar, USA and Brazil, reflecting the many cultures, languages and traditions represented at Nexus. These sessions not only nurtured a love of storytelling, but also reinforced our commitment to global citizenship and cultural understanding, values woven throughout our curriculum.
Turning the Final Page: Dress-Up Day
Book Week concluded with our much-anticipated dress-up day, where learners and staff arrived as their favourite book characters. From classic literary heroes to modern favourites, the school was filled with colour, creativity and conversation, as stories quite literally stepped off the page.
More than just a fun finale, dress-up day celebrated the confidence, imagination and enthusiasm that reading inspires and the sense of belonging that comes from sharing those moments together.
Celebrating Curriculum Through Community
Book Week 2026 was more than a series of events; it was a reflection of how we bring our curriculum to life through meaningful, whole-school experiences. By connecting learners with authors, families with classrooms, and stories with real-world contexts, we continue to nurture confident readers, thoughtful writers and curious global citizens.
