Nexus recently took our swim team to the 56th Singapore National Age Group (SNAG) Swimming Championships, and our learners performed incredibly well. You can read more about the team’s overall success at the Nationals here. While the entire squad demonstrated great commitment, for one learner, Miron, this competition marked a truly significant milestone.

In the 100m freestyle, Miron touched the wall at 50.78 seconds, a performance that firmly establishes him among the top-ranked 14-year-olds globally. Miron’s time is not only remarkable for its speed; it stands as a standout achievement that surpasses even the 13–14 National Age Group record in the United States and ranks him as the number one swimmer in his age group in Russia. We sat down with Miron and his Swim Coach, Adrian Ong, to celebrate this worldwide accomplishment and discuss the dedication that fuels such high-level success.

A World-Class Swimming Result

Reflecting on the race, Miron shares the mix of excitement and pride that followed his race.

“I am really happy with how the 100m freestyle went at the Singapore National Age Group Championships,” Miron says. “Touching in 50.78 at the age of 14, a time faster than the 13–14 National Age Group record in the US, as well as being the number one ranked swimmer for this event at my age in my home country of Russia, is something I’m very proud of. It is something that I have worked hard to achieve and makes all those early mornings worthwhile.”

He describes the race with the calm focus of a seasoned athlete: “This result means a lot to me, especially at this stage,” he adds. “I’ve been working hard on my sprinting, and it’s great to see that pay off in a race like this. I’m really grateful to my coach, Coach Adrian Ong, teammates, and everyone who has been supporting me. This result has definitely motivated me to keep pushing and improving.”

A Purposeful Swim Programme Behind the Results

Coach Adrian emphasises that while Miron’s talent is clear, it is his consistent, daily effort that truly stands out.

“At 14, a 50.78-second time is a solid indicator of his development,” Adrian explains. “What we focus on is his race understanding, his efficiency and pace control. We use tools like electronic hand-trackers to analyse his stroke mechanics, which helps him identify and correct imbalances early on.” Read more about how we use technology to enhance our swim training sessions here.

Adrian shares that the philosophy at Nexus is rooted in the idea that every learner-athlete is unique. “There are no ‘garbage laps,'” he notes. “We treat these athletes as learners first. They have to balance their physical load with their academic responsibilities, and our job is to ensure that both sides of their life are supported.”

Skills Beyond the Pool

The goal of the Nexus swimming programme is to help learners like Miron build a foundation that supports them both in the pool and in the classroom:

  • Time Management: Mastering the art of balancing intense physical training with academic deadlines.
  • Resilience: Learning to navigate the inevitable challenges of high-level competition with a growth mindset.
  • Analytical Thinking: Understanding that success comes from data-driven adjustments and the willingness to learn from every session.

“These are life skills,” says Coach Adrian. “Whether they are in the pool or studying for their exams, they are learning how to set a goal, work toward it systematically, and take ownership of the process.”

Looking Ahead

As Miron balances his upcoming IGCSEs with his swimming commitments, his perspective remains humble and driven: “Start young, stay consistent, and trust the process.”

We are incredibly proud of Miron’s progress at the Nationals and the work ethic shown by our entire swim team. It is a good reminder that consistent effort, paired with the right support, leads to measurable growth.
