Home Waters: Two Nexus Alumni Shine at World Aquatics
Two Nexus alumni, Carmen Weiler Sastre and Jack Cassin, returned to Singapore this summer to compete at the World Aquatics Championships, bringing warm smiles, fierce focus and amazing achievements. For the two swimmers, this return to home waters was their homecoming to Singapore, a country where they spent a large part of their schooling years and built their swimming foundations and a reunion of the two friends of many years.
What they have achieved since Nexus
After seven years of learning and training at Nexus, Carmen and Jack have both graduated and continued flourishing in their academic and sporting pursuits.
Carmen Weiler Sastre made her Olympic debut at Paris 2024 and has continued to develop as a high-performance swimmer while studying on scholarship at Virginia Tech in the United States. She has represented Spain at major international meets and remains one of the most promising young backstroke specialists of her cohort.
Jack Cassin represented Ireland at the World Aquatics Championships and has been a consistent presence at national and international meets. He is currently studying at the University of Limerick and continues to balance academic life with high-level training and competition.
How Nexus contributed to their swimming journeys
Both Carmen and Jack share that Singapore feels like home to them.
“I really enjoyed growing up in Singapore… I would say this is my home,” shares Carmen whose family moved to Singapore when she was just one.
Jack expressed similar sentiments, commenting on his return to the country, “It definitely feels like being back home.”
The two swimmers noted that their time in Singapore really played a huge role in their growth as athletes. Carmen highlights the coaching and support she received at Nexus, crediting the school as the place where she learnt the importance of discipline, determination and learning how to enjoy the process with your teammates and friends. She also fondly remembers the clinics that Nexus hosted with Olympians and world record holders like Kate Campbell, Vlad Morozov and Michael Andrew.
Jack reflected upon a very fundamental part to swimming – the pool. He shared that back in Ireland, there are only two 50m pools in the country, in sharp contrast to the widely available pools in Singapore. Most notably, he highlighted the practical advantages of having an on-campus pool.
This easy access to training facilities made it possible to keep progressing without having to choose between school and sport.
As a school, Nexus closely supports our athletes in managing their academics alongside their sporting commitments. Our structured swim programme offers regular competitive opportunities and targeted coaching from experienced and dedicated coaches. Our learners frequently take part in regular competitive events such as the Singapore National Age Group Championships and also benefit from international training trips, including our annual Thanyapura Swim Trip. These experiences, supported by our excellent Nexus Swim team, helped Carmen and Jack build the important foundations, both skill-wise and mindset-wise.
The beginnings of incredible Nexus alumni stories
As educators, seeing Carmen and Jack succeed fills us with genuine happiness and pride. We are delighted that the close mentoring from our coaches, coupled with state-of-the-art training facilities, have supported and propelled these two learners onto the world stage. As a young school, we hope to see even more future graduates leave their mark on the world like Carmen and Jack.
We congratulate our alumni, Carmen Weiler Sastre and Jack Cassin, on their performances and the way they carried themselves on the world stage. We are so glad to see our learners return to Singapore with warm smiles and impressive achievements and we are proud to have played a part in the Singapore they call home. We look forward to the many more alumni stories that will follow.
