This week, Nexus came together to celebrate Lunar New Year. To mark the Year of the Horse, learners moved beyond their usual daily routines to engage in a wide range of cultural activities and explore how different people celebrate Lunar New Year. The celebrations culminated with a very special Lion and Dragon Dance, watched by members of our community.
Experiencing the Traditions
Learners from across the school participated in activities designed to bring the history and customs of Lunar New Year to life. These weren’t just demonstrations; they were opportunities for learners to test new skills and engage with traditional art forms.
The campus was a hub of activity as learners tried their hand at:
- Art & Precision: Practising the steady hand required for Chinese Calligraphy, ink stamping, and decorating fans.
- Physical Tradition: Exploring the coordination of shuttlecock kicking, the rhythmic handkerchief dance, and the ancient game of pitch-pot.
- Symbolism & Craft: Making zodiac sign bracelets and learning the significance behind dumpling and yuanbao preparation.
One of the most meaningful moments was seeing our “Wishing Tree” fill up. Learners wrote their hopes for the year on slips of paper and hung them among the branches, a collective display of our community’s shared aspirations.
