Nexus Celebrates Lunar New Year

This week, Nexus came together to celebrate Lunar New Year. To mark the Year of the Horse, learners moved beyond their usual daily routines to engage in a wide range of cultural activities and explore how different people celebrate Lunar New Year. The celebrations culminated with a very special Lion and Dragon Dance, watched by members of our community.

Experiencing the Traditions

Learners from across the school participated in activities designed to bring the history and customs of Lunar New Year to life. These weren’t just demonstrations; they were opportunities for learners to test new skills and engage with traditional art forms.

The campus was a hub of activity as learners tried their hand at:

  • Art & Precision: Practising the steady hand required for Chinese Calligraphy, ink stamping, and decorating fans.
  • Physical Tradition: Exploring the coordination of shuttlecock kicking, the rhythmic handkerchief dance, and the ancient game of pitch-pot.
  • Symbolism & Craft: Making zodiac sign bracelets and learning the significance behind dumpling and yuanbao preparation.

One of the most meaningful moments was seeing our “Wishing Tree” fill up. Learners wrote their hopes for the year on slips of paper and hung them among the branches, a collective display of our community’s shared aspirations.

A Community Coming Together

The week’s events concluded with the Lion and Dragon Dance, an experience shared by our community. Watching our learners, parents, and staff gather together to mark the start of the new year reminded us of the importance of these shared milestones.

Whether they were performing on stage, wearing celebration clothes, or sharing a meal at the food stalls, our learners showed a genuine curiosity and respect for the traditions being celebrated.

Looking Ahead

The Year of the Horse is traditionally associated with energy and persistence. As we reflect on a week of rich cultural immersion, we look forward to carrying that same spirit of momentum through the rest of the term.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and expertise to make this week possible.

At Nexus, these celebrations are an essential part of our identity. They offer our community a chance to share lived experiences and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse heritage that makes up our school.
