Year 3’s First Residential Adventure: A Milestone Achievement

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when children step outside the classroom and into the great outdoors. Recently, our Year 3 learners reached a significant milestone in their educational journey, embarking on their very first overnight residential trip to Loyang Civil Service Club.

For many, this was their first time staying away from home without family, and it was a joy to witness the excitement, trepidation, and eventual triumph as they navigated this new experience together. From the moment they boarded the buses, there was a palpable buzz—a mix of nervous energy and eager anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead.

Discovering Lessons Outside the Classroom

At Nexus, all of our residential trips are designed to foster independence, agency, and, most importantly, a strong sense of community. Over two days, our Year 3 learners immersed themselves in a variety of challenges that pushed them to think critically, collaborate, and persevere.

The camp was a balance of high-energy action and quiet reflection:

  • Engineering & Design
Whether they were planning and negotiating during shelter building or experimenting with designs during catapult building, the Year 3 learners showcased incredible problem-solving skills. They saw how teamwork can turn ideas into reality.
  • Active Engagement
The Beach Olympics brought out fantastic team spirit, resilience, and sportsmanship. Whether running, strategising, or supporting a teammate, the learners cheered one another on through every challenge.
  • Connection with Nature
Through Nature Art and a meaningful Beach Clean-Up, the children slowed their pace to observe their surroundings. These activities instilled a sense of care and responsibility for the environment, helping them understand how small, collective actions make a positive impact on the world around them.
  • Teamwork & Reflection
The Orca Challenge and Scavenger Hunt, requiring clear communication and creative thinking, were highlights for many of our learners as they battled in teams to complete team activities. The evening finished with some ever-popular marshmallow roasting, as well an opportunity for our learners to reflect on their experiences from the day.

Growing in Independence

Beyond the activities, the true success of this trip was seen in the small, quiet moments: the responsibility of organising their own cabin space, the courage shown during the first night away, and the kindness shared when a friend needed encouragement.

Watching our learners grow in confidence, resilience, and joy was incredibly rewarding for the Year 3 teaching team and everyone returned to school with tired bodies, full hearts, and a newfound sense of capability.

We are immensely proud of every Year 3 learner for taking these important steps towards greater independence and can’t wait to see what they do in their first overseas trip when they enter Year 4.
