For the past two years, Roselyn has balanced the demands of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) with a growing music career that has seen her perform to audiences of tens of thousands across Asia. After graduating from Nexus International School Singapore, she plans to take a gap year in 2027 to focus on music before continuing her university studies.
Celebrating the IBDP Class of 2026: Roselyn
For Roselyn, one of the things that stood out most about Nexus was the encouragement to pursue her passions alongside her academic studies.
“During my time at Nexus, I felt that it was a place that really encouraged learners to find their interests beyond academics. I often had performances in other cities, and the school was always supportive and accommodating, making it possible for me to balance both my studies and my music.”
That flexibility allowed Roselyn to continue developing her career while embracing new musical experiences in the classroom.
Although she performs pop music professionally, the IB Music course introduced her to entirely new areas of music-making.
“Before Nexus, I didn’t really know how to play instruments. My teachers taught us chords, and I learned how to compose my own music.”
Learning music production was another challenge she welcomed.
“I’d never used Logic or composed music by myself before, so it was really challenging. Performing feels much more natural to me, but learning the production side of music has helped me grow.”
She credits Music teacher Mr Stephen for helping her build confidence in those unfamiliar areas.
“I didn’t know how to play an instrument or use Logic, so Mr Stephen really helped me a lot. He supported me and always gave me new ideas.”
Beyond music, Roselyn says the IB taught her valuable life skills that helped her balance a demanding schedule.
“I’ve learned a lot about self-discipline and time management. The IB is challenging, so managing your time is really important when you’re trying to do well in every subject.”
Some of her favourite memories came not from performing on stage, but from the friendships she built during her two years at Nexus.
“Spending time with my friends really helped me relax. Chatting after classes, having lunch together and studying in the library might seem like simple memories, but they’re really precious to me.”
One experience that particularly stood out was her CAS trip to Loola, Indonesia.
“We helped build a water system for a family, visited a local school and spent time with the students there. I also got to know classmates that I didn’t usually talk to, so it became a really memorable experience.”
As she prepares for her next chapter, Roselyn plans to dedicate a year to growing her music career before beginning university.
Reflecting on her journey, her advice to younger learners is simple.
“Time management is really important, especially during the IB. And most importantly, do things that make you happy.”
For Roselyn, the support she found at Nexus allowed her to pursue both academic success and a growing career in music, proving that learners don’t have to choose between their education and their passions.
