Benefits of Learning a Musical Instrument at Nexus
As Head of Secondary Music at Nexus International School in Singapore, I see how music transforms our learners every day. Learning an instrument is more than just a hobby; it is a powerful way to develop confidence, creativity, and resilience. Our Instrumental Programme gives learners the chance to discover their musical talents and grow them, from their very first note in Nursery to advanced performances in Year 13.
Why Learn an Instrument?
The benefits of learning an instrument extend far beyond the music room. It sharpens memory, strengthens critical thinking, and improves focus. These skills support success in every subject. Performing on stage, whether at a school concert or a community event, builds confidence and presentation skills. Playing in an ensemble or band encourages teamwork, listening, and shared responsibility. Most importantly, music provides our learners with a creative outlet to express themselves and find joy in learning.
A Programme for All Ages and Interests
Our Instrumental Programme is open to learners from Nursery to Year 13. With more than 20 different instruments to choose from, there is something to ignite every learner’s passion, whatever their musical taste or background. Learners can choose from:
Traditional orchestral instruments such as piano, flute, and violin
Jazz favourites, including saxophone and trumpet
Rock and pop pathways with electric guitar, keyboard, and vocals
Traditional Asian instruments such as pipa, guzheng, erhu, and dizi
This range allows our learners to explore music from around the world, build cultural appreciation, and find the instrument that inspires them most.
To help learners discover the right fit, we also run Instrumental Petting Zoo activities after school. These sessions give learners the chance to stop by, try out different instruments, and speak with our music teachers about the lessons we offer. Parents are welcome to join the conversation, too! Keep an eye on school communications for upcoming dates.
Lessons That Fit Every Learner
We offer 30- or 60-minute individual lessons, as well as duo and trio lessons for learners who enjoy learning alongside friends. Lesson times are carefully scheduled around academic commitments to ensure balance.
Our instrumental lessons are taught by highly experienced visiting musicians who specialise in both curriculum and performance coaching. For beginners, we also have a limited number of instruments available for hire, allowing families to try an instrument before making a purchase.
Performing and Belonging
One of the most rewarding parts of our programme is seeing our learners take the stage. Performance is where all their hard work comes to life – and at Nexus, we create as many opportunities as possible for them to share their music with others.
Our learners take part in:
School recitals, concerts, and assemblies
Community events such as the Singapore Botanic Gardens and CHIJMES with Voices of Singapore
FOBISIA Festivals and ABRSM/Trinity exams
Competitions like Young Musician and Young Composer of the Year
Ensembles and choirs for all abilities, from beginner groups to our advanced Chamber Strings and Chamber Choir
Last year, our musicians performed at the iconic Symphony Stage at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This opportunity came after a competitive application process, and it was a proud milestone to see our learners showcase the strength and quality of music at Nexus on such a renowned stage.
We also took part in the Voices of Singapore Festival 2024 at CHIJMES, the nation’s largest non-competitive choral festival, featuring 120 choirs from across Singapore. Our Primary and Secondary Chamber Choirs attended workshops led by industry professionals to refine their vocal and conducting skills. After their performances, they participated in choir exchanges with other schools, sharing insights and learning from fellow musicians.
While we love performing at iconic venues, our on-campus concerts hold a special place in our hearts, as they bring the Nexus community together to enjoy unforgettable evenings of music from our talented choirs and ensembles.
Many of our learners also prepare for ABRSM or Trinity Rock & Pop examinations, join Singapore youth choirs and orchestras, and even secure music scholarships for further education. At Nexus, performing is not just about showcasing talent; it is about building confidence, creating memories, and inspiring a lifelong love for music.
Support Every Step of the Way
Our role is not just to teach, but to mentor. Our visiting specialist musicians guide our learners towards personal goals – mastering a new piece, preparing for an exam, or building confidence for a first performance. Parents are involved through regular updates, an Instrumental Practice Diary, and lesson scheduling via the Clipboard App.
