In February, we were thrilled to welcome two practitioners from the world renowned theatre company Frantic Assembly. Jonnie a movement Director, performer, and proud graduate of Frantic Assembly’s Ignition programme; and Paulo a professional dancer ignition graduate and director. They delivered a series of dynamic and inspiring workshops, offering our learners a powerful insight into the company’s distinctive approach to physical theatre and devising.

Building Foundations

Our Year 10 IGCSE students participated in an introductory workshop designed to develop their understanding of physical storytelling. Through high-energy warm-ups, trust exercises, and creative tasks, students explored how movement can communicate relationships and narrative. Techniques such as “round-by-through” allowed them to experiment with flow, timing, and connection, providing an excellent foundation for those new to physical theatre. The session created a fun, safe, and collaborative environment, encouraging students to step beyond their self-perceived limitations while building confidence and ensemble skills.

Deep Dive into Devising

Our IB Theatre students then took part in an intensive four-hour masterclass, deepening their engagement with the Frantic Assembly method. This extended session challenged learners to think more critically about devising, collaboration, and physicality in performance. Through structured tasks and creative exploration, students refined their ability to generate original material, working with precision, intention, and emotional authenticity. The workshop also reinforced the company’s core ethos: to be brave, bold, collaborative, and open in the creative process.

A Lasting Impact on Our Theatre Programme

Across both workshops, students benefited enormously from working with industry professionals who balance their own creative careers with a passion for education. The experience not only developed their practical skills but also inspired them to approach theatre-making with greater curiosity, discipline, and creativity.

These workshops were a truly valuable addition to our programme, leaving a lasting impact on all participants and further enriching our learners’ journey in theatre at Nexus.
