Celebrating Learner Leadership at Nexus International School

Learner Council 24 25

At Nexus International School, one of our key strategic goals is to foster learner leadership. This means empowering our learners to be proactive, responsible contributors within our school and beyond. Research shows that when young people take on leadership roles, they develop stronger communication, decision-making and teamwork skills—all of which are essential, both in school and in life.

Our Secondary Learner Leadership team recently enjoyed a well-earned reward day at a laser tag arena. Beyond the fun and friendly competition, the day was a chance to strengthen their collaboration, test their strategies under pressure, and reflect on what it means to lead.

Leadership in Action

During the matches, learner leaders stepped up in impressive ways—taking charge of game plans, coordinating their teams, and encouraging their peers. Some of the quietest learners turned out to be some of the sharpest tacticians, while others showed resilience by keeping morale high when rounds did not go to plan.

One team stood out in particular. After a difficult round, they paused to listen, share ideas, and adjust their strategy. Their ability to reset, regroup and collaborate led to a strong comeback—proof that leadership and teamwork go hand in hand.

A few learners faced difficulties, whether navigating the arena or coordinating with their teammates. But they worked through each challenge with positivity, determination and peer support—an important reminder that good leadership is not about perfection, but perseverance.

Real-World Skills in School Roles

After the event, our learner leaders reflected on how the skills they used in laser tag apply directly to their roles in school:

  • Communication – Clearly sharing ideas helps group projects and initiatives run smoothly.
  • Adaptability – When things do not go to plan, strong leaders adjust and find new solutions.
  • Encouragement – Supporting peers across sports, arts and academics builds a stronger school community.

This day was more than just a celebration. It was a hands-on reminder of the qualities that make our learner leaders such important role models.

At Nexus, we are proud to develop a learner leadership body that amplifies student voice, promotes service, and builds a culture of shared responsibility. These roles empower learners to connect meaningfully with peers and staff, preparing them to thrive in whatever futures they choose.

We had the opportunity to speak with the lead representatives from each group, who shared why they took on these roles and reflected on what they achieved over the past year.

Anastasia – Curriculum Ambassador

Why did you want to be a Learner Leader / Ambassador?
I wanted to be a Learner Ambassador because I think that it’s important to have a form of advocacy towards the student voice. By being a part of a committee that focuses on what can help to benefit our current community, I am able to fulfil those aspirations. In addition to this, having the opportunity for learners to be involved with making decisions and constructing ideas and projects to benefit their educational experience is great exposure to life skills. All whilst giving us the opportunity to develop our initiative, leadership, and collaborative skills and capabilities.

What did you achieve in your leadership role this year?
This year I worked on projects that would benefit not only current learners but also those in future years. I wanted to build relationships across the varying student years, with hopes to become more united as a community and to have the ability to share thoughts and ideas, no matter the age or year group.

What are some of the key initiatives you focused on this year?
As IB learners, we explored study methods and worked on creating more quiet and collaborative study spaces. Younger committee members advocated for new events and extracurriculars to bring learners together.
