Meet The Nexus House Captains

Y12 House Captains Crop

At Nexus, learner leadership opportunities continue to expand, and the House Captain role is our latest way of encouraging our learners to take on meaningful responsibilities and inspire others.

Our four Houses are each named after a foundational element in Bahasa Melayu, one of Singapore’s national languages: Api (Fire), Ayer (Water), Tanah (Earth), and Angin (Wind).

We are incredibly proud to introduce our amazing House Captains. They are an inspiring group of leaders who continue to build a vibrant and inclusive community for our learners:

  • Api: Shirish & Oliver
  • Ayer: Emily & Ethan
  • Tanah: Amy & Jasper
  • Angin: Charlotte & Angel

Why Did We Introduce This Role?

The House system has always been a place for belonging at Nexus, and this year, we are taking it to the next level. With more house-focused events planned than ever before, and live house point tallies displayed across the school, we wanted to ensure each House has strong learner leaders at the forefront.

House Captains will work alongside staff to organise events, boost house spirit, and represent the values of their Houses. They will also serve as role models for younger learners, showing that leadership comes in many forms.

The Benefits of the House System

The House system is more than competitions; it is about creating a culture of collaboration, connection, and pride.

  • Fostering community: Learners gain opportunities to connect with peers across different year levels, strengthening friendships and shared identity.
  • Promoting healthy competition and collaboration: Through sports, academic challenges, and creative events, learners will work together towards common goals and celebrate achievements as a team.
  • Encouraging leadership: New roles such as House Captains give our learners real responsibility to lead initiatives, organise activities, and inspire their Houses.

The Application Process

To select our House Captains, we invited applications from our Year 12 learners. Each applicant took part in a group interview, where they demonstrated teamwork, communication, and creativity. They also submitted a written proposal outlining:

  • How they would improve house spirit at Nexus
  • Ways to spread awareness of the House system
  • The values they believe their House should promote

This process ensured that our chosen Captains not only have the skills but also the vision to strengthen the House system this year.

Meet Our House Captains

Angin: Angel & Charlotte

Charlotte and Angel bring creativity and energy to Angin House, focusing on both tradition and innovation. Charlotte’s House Hustle proposal suggested a dedicated orientation day at the start of the school year filled with activities and team-building challenges, all designed to welcome learners and give them an opportunity to bond with their Housemates. She also envisioned celebratory assemblies to recognise achievements and boost motivation. Angel’s campaign, The World Is My Oyster, embodied Nexus values such as inclusion, respect, and excellence. Her ideas include team games and fun incentives like spirit weeks and pizza parties. Together, they aim to celebrate Angin’s spirit of freedom and cultural diversity, encouraging learners to connect, perform, and take pride in their unique identities.

Api: Oliver & Shirish

Shirish and Oliver want to strengthen Api spirit by focusing on giving every learner a chance to shine. Shirish proposed a House Heroes Challenge Week, featuring fun competitions tailored to learners’ strengths. His plan also includes pairing older and younger learners to build bonds and create lasting connections. Oliver’s proposal centres on inclusivity, with a “mini Olympics” of physical games, creative activities like designing a house mascot, and knowledge-based quizzes. Both captains emphasise boosting participation, fostering belonging, and recognising every contribution from athletic achievements to creative and academic talents.

Ayer: Emily & Ethan

Emily and Ethan’s proposals show the vibrant energy of Ayer House. Emily suggested activities that combine teamwork, adrenaline, and strategy, as well as group activities where learners can share their hobbies and form groups around their passions. Ethan’s House Invasion campaign aimed to get learners involved through lunchtime activities such as dodgeball, competitive Kahoot quizzes, and mini sports, alongside a House Quest treasure hunt with hidden items around the school. Together, they champion fun, creativity, and belonging, with initiatives designed to engage learners of all interests and strengths.

Tanah: Amy & Jasper

Amy and Jasper’s vision for Tanah is all about teamwork, resilience, and belonging. Amy proposed a House Spirit Week with inclusive activities and a whole-school House Dress-Up Day, alongside inter-year events to unite learners across age groups. Jasper suggested creating a “Wall of Tanah,” where every learner contributes a decorated stone representing their passions, alongside house achievements and slogans. He also proposed competitive lunchtime matches against other Houses and CAS opportunities for older learners to help run events. Together, they aim to ensure every learner feels proud to be part of Tanah, with visible traditions and exciting activities to showcase their unity and spirit.

Looking Ahead

We are excited to see how our House Captains bring their creativity and leadership to life this year. With their ideas, energy, and commitment, we are confident that our House system will continue to grow into a source of pride and connection for our entire community.

Please join us in congratulating our new House Captains and supporting them as they embark on this exciting journey!
