The Nexus Secondary Chamber Choir proudly returned to the Voices of Singapore Festival at CHIJMES, the nation’s largest non-competitive choral festival. Bringing together singers of all ages and backgrounds, the event created a truly collaborative celebration of music.
Their performance showcased an exciting mix of styles, from classical choral works to jazz and popular favourites, highlighting the versatility and talent of our learners. The final song kicked off with a solo from our Year 9 learner, Daisy, before the whole choir joined in to create a beautiful ending that filled the venue with applause.
Learning Beyond the Stage
Before stepping into the spotlight, our Chamber Choir enjoyed a one-hour masterclass with Sanders Lau, one of Hong Kong’s most sought-after choral conductors. He inspired the group to listen closely to one another, refine their vocal placement, and shape their sound to suit the beautiful CHIJMES setting.
The session pushed our singers to think about more than just the notes on the page. It reminded them of the teamwork, collaboration and shared focus that transform individual voices into a unified and powerful performance. For our learners, it was an unforgettable chance to grow as musicians while preparing for the stage.
Daisy’s Spotlight Moment
For Year 9 learner Daisy, performing a solo at the Voices of Singapore Festival was a milestone in her musical journey. “I was really nervous, but when it got to me being on the stage, it just felt amazing,” she shared. The experience was enriched by the masterclass with Sanders Lau, which she described as inspiring. “We learnt new techniques and different ways to sing, and it made such a difference to our performance.”
Daisy has been part of the Nexus community for seven years, developing her love for music through a range of performing opportunities. “As a performer, Nexus provides many opportunities through choirs, productions, recitals, competitions, lessons, concerts, and even music festivals overseas. Nexus also gives us guidance and advice to help make us better singers,” she explained. For her, the joy of choir comes not only from performing, but also from the friendships and shared purpose: “Being part of the choir is such a good community. You make new friends and it is just really, really great.”
Music at Nexus
The Chamber Choir’s performance at the Voices of Singapore Festival shows just how many doors music can open for our learners. Beyond the classroom, our Music Department makes it possible for learners to sing on incredible stages, learn from world-class conductors, and share their passion with new audiences. These experiences build confidence, spark creativity and strengthen the sense of community our musicians feel when they perform together.
We are so proud of our Secondary Chamber Choir for their fantastic performance at CHIJMES. A big congratulations to every singer involved, and a huge thank you to our Music Department for always creating opportunities that let our learners’ voices be heard.
