Nexus Learners Meet Singapore Minister at AustCham Dialogue

At Nexus, learners are empowered to take their learning beyond the classroom and engage directly with global decision-makers. Recently, two of our Year 13 IB Economics learners, Prada and Shirish, had the incredible opportunity to attend the prestigious AustCham Singapore Ministerial Dialogue, featuring Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development.

Moderated by AustCham Singapore Vice President Thomas FitzGerald and supported by event partner Toll Group, the exclusive event brought together business leaders and policymakers to explore Singapore’s economic priorities, its next phase of growth in a shifting global landscape, and the bilateral relationship between Australia and Singapore.

Key Discussion Themes 

Our learners sat in on Minister Indranee’s opening keynote address, listened to a panel discussion, and witnessed an open Q&A addressing high-level trade, policy, and international business opportunities. Key themes explored included:

• Navigating Global Challenges: Adapting to geopolitical uncertainty, demographic constraints, an ageing population, and rapid technological change such as AI.
• Regional Connectivity: Looking ahead to Singapore chairing ASEAN in 2027, regional connectivity and deeper economic links were highlighted, creating opportunities across sectors such as professional services, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services.
• Core Foundations: Maintaining trust, reliability, and efficiency as central elements to Singapore’s resilience and role as a regional hub.

Classroom Concepts Come to Life: Learner Reflections

Attending this dialogue allowed our learners to see how topics like economics, international relations, and public policy apply directly to government decision-making. Both Prada and Shirish shared how hearing directly from policymakers made their textbook concepts come to life:

• Prada, IB Economics Learner:
  “Attending the Ministerial Dialogue was an insightful experience, as it allowed me to see many of the concepts I have learnt in IB Economics being applied to real-world economic issues. The discussion covered Singapore’s economic outlook, the importance of connectivity, the impact of tariffs, government policies, technological developments such as AI, and challenges that arise from an ageing population. These topics are closely connected to the concepts we studied in class, particularly government intervention, economic growth, tariffs, and the role of government policy. Additionally, I found the discussion on Singapore’s Economic Strategy Review (ESR) interesting, as it highlighted how factors such as geopolitical uncertainty, demographic constraints, and rapid technological change can influence decision-making and long-term growth strategies. Overall, I think the experience made the concepts in my textbook feel as though they had come to life because I was able to hear how economic ideas and policies are considered by policymakers and businesses in practice. Opportunities like this make classroom learning more engaging and meaningful through broader perspectives.”

• Shirish, IB Economics Learner:
  “Attending the Ministerial Dialogue with Ms Indranee Rajah was a valuable experience because it gave me the opportunity to hear directly from a policymaker about Singapore’s economic priorities and challenges. I was able to relate much of the discussion to concepts we have studied in Economics, particularly government intervention, economic growth, trade, and the trade-offs involved in policymaking. It was interesting to see how concepts we often analyse through diagrams and theory are considered when making real policy decisions. Opportunities like this make what we learn in class more relevant and give learners a better understanding of how economic decisions are made in practice.”

Inspiring Future Leaders

By observing high-level diplomacy and witnessing how international business chambers and government ministers collaborate to foster regional growth, Prada and Shirish gained invaluable, future-focused insights into the economic trends shaping the world they will soon lead.
