Nexus Presents Footloose: An Interview with Aurora

Each year, Nexus Secondary learners take to the stage in a spectacular musical that celebrates creativity, teamwork and confidence. This year’s production of Footloose is our biggest yet — filled with iconic songs, energetic choreography and heartfelt performances.

We sat down with Aurora, who plays Ariel, to learn more about her experience in her first lead role and what audiences can expect from this year’s show.

Hi Aurora, what have you enjoyed most about the show so far?

Aurora: Honestly, that’s a really broad question because I think I’ve enjoyed all of it so far! The singing, the dancing, and just being able to collaborate with everybody has been so fun. I’ve really enjoyed every part of the process.

Overall, I think my favourite part has probably been the dancing. At first it was hard because I’m not a professional dancer, but once you learn all the steps and perform them together with the music, it’s so fun.

You’ve taken part in several Nexus productions before, but this is your first lead role! How has the experience been different this time?

I can really show off my vocal skills and collaborate with a lot more people. Now that I’ve been part of a few musicals at Nexus, I’ve built up my confidence and I’m honestly just really excited to be on stage in front of an audience.

Ariel is a very complex character because she’s a bit of a bad girl, but she’s also very proper in front of her parents. I’m really excited to play her as she has so many layers, and it has been fun to explore that contrast.

What advice would you give to other learners who are thinking about joining a production?

Aurora: Just do it! Put yourself out there and don’t hesitate. Even if you’re in the ensemble or have a smaller part, it makes such a big difference just being there. Everyone contributes something important to the show.

Productions at Nexus give everyone such a great opportunity to make friends. Even if you don’t think theatre is your thing, it’s just so nice to be part of a group, to dance and have fun. The teachers are so professional and talented. They teach us really cool stuff and make every rehearsal exciting!

Q: Finally, why should everyone come and see Footloose?

Aurora: Definitely a lot of dancing! Footloose is such a familiar name because of the movie, but this is the musical adaptation — so you can expect a spectacular show with amazing songs, energy and so much heart. It’s going to be really good. You should come!
