Nexus Presents Footloose: An Interview with Lukas

Each year, Nexus Secondary learners take to the stage in a spectacular production that showcases the passion, energy and creativity of our performing arts community. This year’s musical, Footloose, is our biggest yet — featuring our largest cast, dynamic choreography and the timeless songs everyone loves.

We caught up with Lukas, our year 13 learner who plays the lead role of Ren, to hear about his experience in the lead role and what makes Footloose such a special show for the Nexus community.

Hi Lukas, what have you enjoyed most about the show so far?

Lukas: This show is like a dancer’s dream. It’s got so many good dance numbers that are tricky but so fun at the same time. We’re having such a blast doing it. I also love all the songs — they’re incredible. It’s all the old hits that all the parents know, and we just have such fun singing them.

My favourite song has to be I’m Free, which closes Act One. It’s a massive dance number. Everyone’s doing splits, leaps, stunts, and we’ve even got some flips this year! It’s so fun to perform and is easily the most lively moment in the show.

I also love meeting the younger kids who come up from Primary. They’re so excited about being part of the show, and I love seeing that enthusiasm. In a production, you need a lot of energy and commitment, and the younger years always have that. It makes me smile, and I’m happy to see that excitement carrying on at Nexus.

How is Footloose different from past Nexus productions?

Lukas: I think Footloose, compared to Legally Blonde, has a lot more heartfelt moments and sincerity. It’s still got that comedy that makes all the parents and learners laugh, but it definitely feels more emotional. It’s incredible and such fun to perform.

What advice would you give to learners who want to join future productions?

Lukas: It’s a big thing starting a production — you need to give it your all — but the end result is so worth it. You’ll have such a fun time doing it. There’ll be days when you don’t really want to come, but once you’re here, you’ll be singing your heart out and dancing and just having a blast.

Theatre at Nexus is the most incredible thing because it turns into a family. We all have such fun together and create really strong bonds that go beyond the show itself. We’re all just here to have a good time — it’s not overly serious, we’re just having a laugh.

Finally, why should everyone come and see Footloose?

Lukas: You can expect a lot of laughs, maybe some tears, and you’ll definitely feel like dancing along. Everyone’s having such a good time performing it, and the audience will too.
