Five years ago, Danyil joined Nexus International School Singapore as a Year 7 learner. Now, after graduating from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at Nexus International School (Singapore), he is preparing to study International Relations and Modern History at the University of St Andrews, taking with him the academic confidence, leadership skills and global perspective he developed throughout his time at Nexus.
Celebrating the IBDP Class of 2026: Danyil
For Danyil, one of the defining aspects of his Nexus experience has been the support of his teachers, who encouraged him to become an independent learner while tailoring their approach to help him succeed.
“The most beneficial part of Nexus for me has always been the teaching staff. Whether it was communicating through email or tailoring the learning experience to what each student needs best, I always found that really supportive.”
That personalised approach gave him the confidence to embrace the challenges of the IBDP, particularly the opportunities for independent research and critical thinking.
“Throughout the IB programme, there are a lot of opportunities for independent work, so communication and self-management are really big skills that I’ve developed.”
His love of learning naturally led him towards International Relations and Modern History, a course that reflects both his academic interests and his desire to contribute to the wider world.
“I think it’s a field where I can make a real impact in areas of conflict and diplomacy. That’s where I can put my skills to best use.”
While history and economics quickly became favourite subjects, it was his history teacher, Miss Abbie, who had one of the biggest influences on his academic journey.
“She really focuses on skills-based learning rather than just content and lets us explore the content that interests us ourselves. Through independent reading and journal articles, we were also able to go beyond the course. It’s been very beneficial to me.”
Beyond the classroom, Danyil embraced opportunities that allowed him to put those skills into practice. One of the most significant was the Junior Achievement Company Programme, where he served as President of GreenTopia, a learner-led company that developed an educational card game promoting sustainability and collaboration.
Together, the team built the company from the ground up, raised more than S$5,000 for charity and went on to win the Singapore competition, earning the opportunity to represent the country at the Asia Pacific finals in Japan.
“It’s probably one of my core memories from Nexus, and I’ll definitely remember it for the rest of my life.”
Leading a team of 20 learners also taught him valuable lessons that extended far beyond entrepreneurship.
“I learned a very high degree of independence, but also how to best work in a team, especially being the leader of that team as the president of the company.”
Outside of academics, Danyil also helped build something new within the Nexus community. As part of the learner-led boys’ volleyball team, he saw firsthand how initiative and teamwork could create opportunities for others.
The team, founded by a fellow IBDP learner, has grown steadily over the past year, and before graduating, Danyil has been working with teammates to ensure it continues for future learners through open trials and recruitment.
He also enjoys photography, another interest he explored through CAS while developing his creative skills beyond the classroom.
When it came time to apply for university, Danyil says the support of the Nexus university counselling team was invaluable. Working closely with his counsellor, he refined his UCAS personal statement through multiple drafts, ensuring it reflected not only his achievements but also who he had become as a learner.
“I really focused on presenting the best possible pieces of evidence and experiences, but specifically how those experiences changed who I am as a student and how that reflects on who I’m going to be at university.”
Looking back on the application process, there is little he would change.
“I’m very happy with all my choices, and I think I’ve been able to achieve the standard of academics that I want without compromising on my hobbies, sports and social life as well.”
As he prepares to begin the next chapter at the University of St Andrews, Danyil encourages younger Nexus learners to make the most of every opportunity available to them.
“Definitely take all the opportunities you can get. If there’s any sort of extracurricular coming your way, just do it. This is a great time to explore and figure out what you like, so just go for it. There’s no point in holding back.”
Danyil’s IB journey reflects so much of what we value at Nexus: academic excellence, resilience in the face of challenge, and a deep commitment to personal growth.
