Beyond the IGCSE Grades: Celebrating Our Learners
The stories behind the results
Academic excellence does not look the same for every learner.
For some, it means making a significant leap from where they started. For others, it means learning how to balance the demands of their first major examination year with the activities and interests they love. It can mean finding the confidence to aim higher, developing new ways to study or learning to trust in your own abilities.
We asked some of our highest-achieving learners to reflect on their IGCSE journey, what they are most proud of and what helped them reach these results.
Chiara
10 A*-A/9-7
Joining Nexus in Year 9, Chiara navigated her first major examination year while continuing to pursue her hobbies, sports and extracurricular activities. Her results reflect her ability to develop effective study habits, stay organised and maintain a healthy balance throughout her IGCSE journey.
“Looking back at my IGCSE journey, I am most proud of my ability to manage keeping up with studying, in addition to staying involved in my hobbies, sports and other extracurricular activities. There was definitely a learning curve to it and it took a lot of trial and error, but I am proud to say that in the end, it all came together.
The main components that were key for me include staying organised and using active revision techniques such as past paper practice. Additionally, a really important element for me was maintaining a healthy balance between studying and enjoying my hobbies in order to keep me motivated during the exam period. Whilst these were all crucial elements, I believe that the most important factor in enabling my success was having such a supportive environment both at home, and in school.”
Denis
7 A*-A/9-7
Denis achieved 7 A*-A/9-7, including perfect scores across all three sciences. His approach to revision was focused and strategic: rather than trying to revise every topic equally, he built a strong foundation in class before using trial exams and past papers to identify the areas where he needed to focus his efforts.
For Denis, success came from being consistent from the beginning and making his revision purposeful.
“Through the use of trial exams and my own work on past papers, I was able to identify any topic or concept with which I struggled, therefore allowing me to focus my studies on it specifically rather than spending time revising everything one by one.
A teacher who helped me deeply during my IGCSE’s would definitely have to be my Physics teacher, Ms Tamzin. Her knowledge of the IGCSE Physics course, along with her strong desire to educate and support every learner in our class to the highest standard, was one of the key pillars that helped me achieve my results.”
Francesca
9 A*-A/9-7
Francesca’s IGCSE journey is a particularly powerful example of academic growth. Joining Nexus in Year 10, she began her IGCSEs with grades that were barely passing. Over the following two years, she developed her confidence, made significant academic progress and ultimately achieved 9 A*-A/9-7.
For Francesca, one of the most important parts of that journey was learning to believe in her own ability.
“Looking back on my IGCSE journey, I’ve grown so much in my studies, and I pushed myself to do my very best. At the beginning of Year 10, I was receiving grades that barely passed. I was always doubting my ability, never fully believing that I was capable of an eight or a nine in any of my subjects. Since then, I’ve grown to be more confident in my abilities and know that I am capable of so much more.
What helped me succeed was how many amazing resources were available for me to use. My teachers put so many amazing worksheets, documents, and study guides on Canvas for us to use. Having those study materials so accessible helped me stop feeling stuck on where to start and motivated me.”
Freddie
9 A*-A/9-7
Having been at Nexus since Year 4, Freddie completed his IGCSE journey with a particular sense of pride in his Chemistry result, reflecting his passion for the subject and his ambition to study it at university. Throughout the examination period, he focused on managing his time effectively, preparing thoroughly and maintaining a healthy balance with his friends.
“I am happy I have completed my IGCSE journey knowing I did my best. Looking back, it was stressful at times, but in the end I learned a lot from the experience. Specifically, I am most proud of my chemistry result, as it is the subject I enjoy the most and hope to study at university.
I am happy with how I managed my time during study leave and the effort I put into being as prepared as possible for the exams. My friends and I also made sure to turn the exam season into a fun experience by meeting up to study together, and also making sure to take time away from exam preparation to relax.
All of my teachers helped me so much and motivated me to do my best. I am very glad to have some of the same teachers for the IB Diploma.”
Harry
8 A*-A/9-7
Harry’s IGCSE journey was defined by determination and consistency. He recognised that maintaining his focus and applying himself consistently was a challenge, but found motivation in surrounding himself with peers who shared his ambition. Alongside his academic achievements, he continued to pursue his passion for football, culminating in winning SEASAC with the Nexus U19 team.
“I am most proud of how dedicated I was and how hard I worked right up until the last exam. I am proud of this because I normally struggle to consistently apply myself, but I was able to overcome that challenge.
I believe that surrounding myself with other people who aspire to do well and work hard helped motivate me and hold me accountable. Also, going to the National Library to study proved to be a good place where I could study without external distractions compared to home.
I would like to thank my PHE and History teachers especially, as both helped me a lot with my IGCSE journey. Both of these teachers took the time to understand me personally, which contributed to my respect and appreciation of them, as well as my drive to succeed in their classes.”
James
9 A*-A/9-7
James’ IGCSE journey demonstrates the impact of taking ownership of your learning. Although Mathematics was a significant challenge for him, achieving a 5 in his trial exams became a turning point. Rather than allowing the result to define him, James decided to take responsibility for the areas he needed to improve, committing to daily revision and seeking help when necessary. He ultimately raised his final Mathematics grade to a high 7.
“Two things stand out for me: The first was my Biology score. It was the subject I cared the most about, so I’m really pleased that I was able to perform well in the examination. The other was my math journey. I really struggled with math throughout IGCSEs. I didn’t understand concepts and only got a 5 for the trial exams. This was really hard for me because I take pride in my work, and seeing this result made me upset.
However, I started doing daily revision and seeking help when it was needed, and I was able to boost my final grade up to a high 7.
The main contributing factor was the realisation that ultimately you are in charge. If you don’t change something, then it stays the same. If you want something in life, you have to make it happen.”
Millie
8 A*-A/9-7
Joining Nexus in Year 9, Millie has seen her confidence grow alongside her academic results. She remembers becoming more confident and motivated throughout the course, and also learned how important organisation was when balancing the demands of studying for multiple IGCSE subjects.
“I am also really proud of how much my self-confidence grew over the past two years. I put in as much effort as I could, and as time went on, I saw improvements, which definitely boosted my confidence and motivation to study hard.
I think that being organised was definitely very beneficial, as IGCSE students have to manage studying 8–10 subjects at once. It can feel quite overwhelming, but organising all of my different subjects really helped me distribute my time to each subject. Additionally, the extensive support provided by my teachers not only enabled me to achieve excellent grades but also left me thoroughly prepared for my exams.”
Oliver
8 A*-A/9-7
Oliver’s results reflect significant academic progress during his IGCSE years. After averaging Bs in Year 10 and Year 11, he achieved a 9 in Mathematics, an A* in English and an 8 in Economics, alongside a strong overall set of results. He credits regular practice, studying with friends and the encouragement of teachers who pushed him to believe that higher grades were within reach.
“Supportive parents and friends, and lots of past papers were the main drivers of my success. I had a friend whom I went to the national library with multiple times a week. We did lots of past papers together, marked them, and always sought out ways to improve.
All the teachers were very supportive. However, the ones who pushed me the most were my Mathematics teacher, Mr Donohue, and my Business Studies teacher, Mr Raza. A memory that stood out is that every few weeks, Mr Donohue would say, ‘This class is for people who want to get 9s,’ and I’d have more optimism and hope towards getting better results.”
Peony
7 A*-A/9-7
Peony’s IGCSE journey highlights the value of persistence when a subject does not come easily at first. She was particularly proud of the progress she made in subjects she initially found challenging, developing greater confidence through revision and discovering that subjects she once found difficult could become subjects she genuinely enjoyed.
“I am particularly proud of my progress in a few specific subjects that I had initially found challenging. After spending a significant amount of time revising, I gained more confidence and further understanding, but I also grew to enjoy them, which I would have never expected.
I believe finding an effective way of studying was the most significant factor that helped me achieve these results. Discovering the most suitable way that benefits you the most will make studying easier and help you stay motivated. I think my determination really helped me because I set myself a goal that I aimed for, and I could always reflect on it. I am also very grateful to have my parents’ constant support and reassurance when I am feeling unconfident.
I want to thank all the teachers who have taught me in IGCSE, they were all very supportive, and I learned so much from them.”
More than a result
Together, these stories show that academic excellence at Nexus takes many forms.
It is not simply about the final grade, but about the journey that leads there: the determination to improve, the confidence to aim higher, the resilience to overcome challenges and the willingness to seek support when it is needed.
At Nexus, we are proud to create an environment where learners are supported to understand their strengths, take ownership of their learning and pursue ambitious goals. Our teachers provide the guidance, resources and encouragement that help our learners make the most of their abilities, while our learners bring the determination and curiosity to take their studies further.
Our 2026 IGCSE results are a celebration of what our learners have achieved. More importantly, their stories remind us that behind every outstanding result is a journey of curiosity, determination, growth and the courage to aim higher.
Congratulations to all our 2026 IGCSE learners. We are incredibly proud of you.
