At Nexus International School Singapore, Service Learning encourages learners to look beyond themselves, engage with real-world issues and take meaningful action to support others. Our learners recently put this into practice through the Blue Dragon Walk, with almost 50 learners coming together to raise awareness of human trafficking and poverty in Vietnam. By taking on challenges of different distances, they raised over $4,000 for Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, demonstrating how a shared commitment to a cause can make a meaningful difference.
With almost 50 Nexus learners taking part, the event brought together members of our community who wanted to challenge themselves and support a worthwhile cause.
Going the distance for a greater cause
The Blue Dragon Walk invites participants to choose their own challenge, with distances of 10 km, 21 km and 42 km available. Participants raise funds to support Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, an organisation working to end human trafficking in Vietnam and help vulnerable children and families build safer, brighter futures.
For our Year 13 learners, Ari, Avi and Jonathan, the 42 km walk offered an opportunity to push themselves beyond their usual limits while contributing to something bigger than themselves.
“We took on the full 42km as we wanted to turn this opportunity to raise money into something more challenging and we have always wanted to run a full marathon so this was a perfect opportunity.”
Their decision meant committing to a significant physical challenge, demonstrating the perseverance and dedication needed to see a demanding goal through to the finish.
For learners considering the Blue Dragon Walk next year, Ari, Avi and Jonathan have one key recommendation: prepare for the challenge.
“We strongly recommend practicing for this distance. We do run occasionally and take part in sports which definitely helped us prepare for this.”
Their advice highlights the importance of setting realistic goals, building up endurance and giving yourself enough time to prepare.
Most importantly, learners do not need to take on the longest distance to make a meaningful contribution. Choosing a challenge that suits their abilities and committing to a cause they care about is a valuable first step.
At Nexus, learning extends beyond academic achievement. Through Service Learning, learners have opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world issues, develop an understanding of different perspectives and recognise how their actions can contribute to positive change.
Whether walking 10 km or taking on the full 42 km, every participant contributed to a collective effort that demonstrated how individual actions can add up to make a difference.
