Nexus Receives MYP Authorisation from the IB
This month, we’re thrilled to share that Nexus has been authorised to offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) — and the visiting team from the IB had some remarkable things to say about what they saw here.
Why IB Authorisation Matters and What It Means for Families
When a school is authorised to offer an IB programme, they are recognised for meeting a globally recognised standard of educational quality.
To receive this status, Nexus went through a rigorous process that examined everything from how our teachers plan and deliver lessons, to how we support learners, assess progress and foster a culture of reflection and growth. The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) looks closely at what’s happening in the classroom, the conversations taking place between teachers and learners, and whether the school environment truly supports inquiry-led, meaningful learning.
For families, this means your child is experiencing an internationally benchmarked education — one that aligns with global best practice and prepares them to thrive in a complex, fast-changing world. The authorisation is an assurance that the MYP at Nexus is not only designed with intention, but implemented with integrity, professionalism and care.
During their visit, the IB team shared some incredible feedback, not just about our structures and systems, but about the learning culture they observed throughout the school. Here are a few highlights:
A welcoming environment where learners feel safe to speak up: Classrooms are open, warm and inclusive — something the IB commended as foundational to meaningful learning.
Real-world learning that matters: From climate change to cultural identity, learners at Nexus are exploring issues that connect to both their local community and the world. The IB noted that learners are regularly encouraged to reflect on what they’re learning and why it matters. They are also given the tools to turn that learning into action.
Intentional development of the IB Learner Profile: The visiting team observed that our learners were growing holistically, beyond their academic knowledge. They are growing as thinkers, communicators, risk-takers and reflective individuals — in line with the attributes the IB champions.
Learners taking the lead: Learners could clearly articulate what they were learning, how they were being supported, and how they were setting their own goals. Whether it was through inquiry projects, design challenges or collaborative work, the IB team saw learners who were genuinely engaged and motivated.
Strong support systems: The IB team recognised the way we support learners with diverse language needs and learning profiles, ensuring that every student can access the curriculum and feel successful.
Thanks to the comprehensive nature of this authorisation visit, this feedback was gathered through various conversations across the entire school community, including teachers, learners, and even parents, as part of the process. The team highlighted the expertise of our staff, the effectiveness of our communication, and the shared understanding of what a great learning environment looks like.
What Happens Next?
While authorisation is an important milestone, it’s not the finish line. As we continue to implement the MYP across Years 7 to 9, the Nexus team is focused on refining and enhancing the programme based on what our learners need most, from sharpening our assessment practices to further developing opportunities for learner-led service and action.
We will strengthen our programme based on the IB’s recommendations that are already guiding our next steps.
A Reflection of Our Community
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was this MYP authorisation effort. Behind the scenes, years of planning and preparation were in the works, driven by the expertise of our staff — particularly Stephanie Hughes (Deputy Head of Secondary) and Abbie Melis (MYP Coordinator). We also extend a huge thanks to the learner and parent panels for contributing their time and efforts to this process. Thanks to the support and dedication from every teacher, learner and parent, we brought the MYP to life at Nexus.
It also reflects what makes Nexus unique: a deep belief in empowering learners, a commitment to relationships, and an education that values curiosity, challenge and care in equal measure.
We’re excited about what lies ahead — and proud to continue offering an internationally recognised, future-focused education for every learner who walks through our doors.
