Outdoor Learning in Malaysia: Year 4’s Desaru Adventure Highlights

Year 4 Desaru 11

Our Year 4 learners recently returned from an unforgettable residential trip to Desaru, where they traded the classroom for the great outdoors! Led by the expert team at Orca Nation, the trip was a whirlwind of exploration, teamwork, and personal growth.

From the moment they crossed the border, our learners were immersed in the unique environments of the Malaysian coast and our itinerary was packed with hands-on learning. Activities included:

  • Environmental Exploration: Groups delved into Intertidal Exploration, discovering the fascinating creatures of the shoreline, and trekking to a local viewpoint for a stunning panoramic look at the South China Sea.
  • Survival Skills: Learners tapped into their inner explorers by building bivvy shelters, filtering water, and learning the art of igniting a fire using flint and steel.
  • Sustainability in Action: A focused beach clean-up allowed learners to see the direct impact of pollution. It sparked vital conversations about the “3 Rs”—Refuse, Reuse, and Recycle—to protect our local habitats.
  • Evening Reflections: After days full of energy, the group enjoyed roasted marshmallows at the campfire and settled into their rooms for some well-earned rest.

Beyond the fun and games, this trip was a cornerstone for character development. We witnessed incredible growth in several key areas:

  • Independence: For many, this was a significant step in managing themselves away from home. From packing bags to navigating new routines, the learners showed remarkable maturity.
  • Collaboration: Team-building challenges required clear communication and collective problem-solving. Learners had to persevere together to achieve success.
  • Resilience: Whether it was trekking in the heat or trying a new vegetable at dinner, our Year 4s stepped out of their comfort zones with “big smiles” and an open-minded attitude.
  • Connection: The “unplugged” time—playing cards, swinging on swings, and chatting with peers—allowed for deeper friendships and new connections across the year group.

We are incredibly proud of how our learners represented the Nexus values. They returned tired but full of stories, having proven to themselves just how much they can achieve when they embrace a new challenge.

A huge thank you to the Orca Nation instructors and our dedicated staff for making this safe and enriching experience possible.
